The team of Flowers From Belgium
And this is us, the team from Flowers From Belgium!
Besides Koen, the administrator and president of our organization, our team also includes Paul, the technical director and Koen's right hand man, and Erick, in charge of the PR and communication. Eventhough we are the official members of the organization, there's also plenty of volunteers who help us regularly to create our artworks, and we are so thankfull to be able to count on them.
We are a group of friends who share one vision, one hobby and one passion: to create ephemeral artworks using natural materials.
Evolution, innovation and creativity are our standards, and creating masterpieces our goal.
Our passion started in 1994, with our first participation and construction of the flower carpet in the Grand Place of Brussels. Since then, Koen has directed the last 15 editions of this event.
Floral and ephemeral art carpets: an exclusive export products
The flower- and ephemeral art carpets have raised though the years to the category of exclusive export product of Belgium. The know-how and the way of working to be able to realize such monumental projects (up to 2.000m²) in a short period of time -a few hours mainly- is the biggest difficulty our team has learned to master.
BRUSSELS FLOWER CARPET
One of our oldest partners is Brussels Flower Carpet. We’ve been partners since 1994 and we’ve worked together and collaborated with each other plenty of times creating the most breathtaking masterpieces worldwide.
Respect for Begonias
When we make flower carpet projects in Belgium we mostly work with the 'belgian pride'. When we work with begonias, we always work together with the AVBS, the Flanders federation of green industry.
Time to adapt and renew: Hello Dahlias!
Historically, during the first 22 editions of the Brussels Flower Carpet, it was the begonia that adorned the Grand Place, providing the shapes and colors of the carpet.
However, over the years, this flower has become increasingly rare. Now at days, there are only three major producers of this species left in Belgium, which has led the designers to work more and more with other varieties.
In 2024, a major change took place: the flower carpet of Brussels was composed exclusively of dahlias. Thanks to a collaboration with the Bloemencorso Loenhout association, thousands of dahlias in a variety of vibrant colors gave the carpet all the brilliance it deserved.
Evolution: new materials and techniques
We love to experiment with new materials and techniques with which we are not as familiar. When we do a project in a foreign country we like to explore new options and we work with the autochthonous materials, not just because it's a way of expanding our know-how, but primarily because we are ecologically commited and we strive for sustainability. That's why last years we also worked with materials such as: coloured rocksalt, coloured pebbles, coloured sawdust, dried flower petals, coloured treebark, autochthonous flowers... Because of this we have been able to increase our knowledge, build up experience and keep helping ephemeral art and flower carpets to evolve and grow.
Members of the Coordinadora Internacional de Entidades de Alfombristas de Arte Efímero, an international cooperative ephemeral art organizations world wide.
We are proud members of this International coordinator, who's mail objective is to promote and enhace ephemeral art around the globe. Therefore the coordinator organizes yearly many international activities and projects, stimulating the cooperation ans teamwork between the different members.
