In 2013 we went to iIndia to build a massive flower carpet infront of one of the most sacred places of the country: the India Gate of New Dehli. This was a Royal mission, a project commissioned by the Belgian Royal Family in commemoration of Wold War I. The event was innaugurated by the Princess Astrid of Belgium, together with the royal authorities and high representatives both from India and Belgium. Therefore, to honour the country, their beliefs and traditions, we used their most holy flower: the Marygold.
Due the extreme warm dry weather, we had to adapt our technique of working in order to conservate the freshness of the flowers for as long as possible. That's why we used an isolating layer with humidified dried grass and straw between the ground and the microperforated plastic surface where we build the flowercarpet. That way the flowers remained fresh looking and colourful during the days after the opening of the event.
